<i><b>H.Tshantshapanyan</b>, Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, Assistant Professor </i>The Department of Linguistics and Intercultural Communication was established in 2004 at Yerevan State Linguistic University. In the course of its activities, the Department has been successful in winning great popularity and recognition and currently takes a worthy place in the structure of Yerevan State Linguistic University. Since 2004 new and effective methods of teaching have been embedded, and, the curricula and programs are in compliance with the requirements of topical problems adopted by the system of education in the Republic of Armenia.
Today, the graduating students of the Department are in demand not only in the labor market in the Republic of Armenia, but outside its limits as well. They work successfully in different spheres, such as, different educational institutions, training and methodological centers, state governing bodies, foreign agencies and international organizations, mass media and others. Choosing Political Science, Area Studies, International Tourism, International Journalism, Psychology or some other specializations to study, the students of the Department at the same time master two foreign languages, thus becoming competent and competitive specialists in the labor market. And this is one of the advantages of the Department of Linguistics and Intercultural Communication.
The highly skilled specialists and distinguished pedagogues, who lecture at the Department, successfully carry out their educational, methodological and scientific activities as well. In the course of the study the students of the department have the opportunity not only to attend the lectures of YSLU professors and instructors, but also lectures delivered by managers and officials of different international organizations, ambassadors and by foreign specialists.

In 2004, 1300 students studied at the Department of Linguistics and Intercultural Communication, while currently the Department enrolls about 1500 students.

The Department of Linguistics and Intercultural Communication is one of the first departments in the Republic of Armenia providing a double-profiled education:

  • 031200 bachelor of linguistics and intercultural communication
  • 032300 bachelor of translation studies/philology
  • The Department of Linguistics and Intercultural Communication trains students at a bachelor program in the following specializations:

  • The English Language and Area Studies
  • The English Language and Political Science
  • The English Language and International Journalism
  • The English Language and International Tourism
  • The English Language and Psychology
  • The following foreign languages are taught parallelly at the department in accordance with the students’ choice:

  • The German Language
  • The French Language
  • The Spanish Language
  • The Italian Language
  • The Persian Language
  • Bachelors of Translation Studies/Philology are trained in the following specializations:

  • Translation Studies (English-Armenian)
  • Translation Studies (English-Russian-Armenian)
  • The following Chairs and Centers function at the Department:

  • Chair of UNESCO on Human Rights, Democracy and European Studies (Head of the Chair: V. Ter-Ghevondyan, Candidate of Science in History)
  • Chair of Linguistics and Theory of Communication (Head of the Chair: K. Abrahamyan, Doctor of Science in Philology)
  • Chair of Anthropology and Area Studies (Head of the Chair: H. Kharatyan, Candidate of Science in History)
  • Scientific-Educational Center ‘’International Journalism” (Head of the Center: T. Hovhannisyan)
  • Scientific- Educational Center ‘’International Tourism” (Head of the Center: M. Hayrapetyan)
  • The Department of Linguistics and Intercultural Communication cooperates with the Halle Wittenberg and Zign Universities in Germany and with the Kaunas University. The Chairs and Centers functioning at the Department cooperate with different local State structures/the Government of the RA, the National Assembly of RA, The Constitutional Court of RA, etc./, with the international organizations in the RA /the Armenian office of OSCE, Eurasia Cooperation Fund, etc./, and with leading mass media and tourist agencies.
