14.06.2011 INTERNATIONAL SEMINAR WITH THE PARTICIPATION OF CIS NETWORK UNIVERSITIES
May 31, Peoples Friendship University of Russia together with CIS Interstate Fund for Humanitarian Cooperation (IFHC) held an international seminar, which was attended by representatives of the leading universities from the Republic of Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russian Federation and the Republic of Tajikistan. Yerevan State University and Yerevan State Linguistic University "Bryusov" were among them. During the seminar the educational programs of 2010- 2011 academic year were summed up. A number of new joint educational programs have been discussed. As a result the students of participant universities gained an opportunity of scholarships. On June 28 at Peoples Friendship University an International Student Conference "Universities and Innovation: Networking cooperation among of CIS universities in training for the innovation economy" will take place, and on July 25 the university organizes a Summer School and opens its doors for Young Leaders of CIS and Europe.

14.06.2011 AMBASSADOR OF MEXICO HELD A CONFERENCE-LECTURE FOR YSLU STUDENTS
On June 10, YSLU hosted Alfredo Peres Bravo, ambassador of the United Mexican States, who arrived in Armenia to take part in the series of events organized within the frames of days of Mexican culture in Armenia. It was on this occasion that Alfredo Peres Bravo held a conference-lecture for YSLU students presenting the history and culture of Mexico. The students, being very interested in this topic, covered the ambassador with their questions and comments. The latter was pleasantly surprised by the students` fluent knowledge of Spanish and their great interest in Mexican culture and history. The ambassador thanked YSLU rector and students for the active participation in the events of days of Mexican culture and voiced a hope that such a promising start would be a ground for the future cooperation.

13.06.2011 THE AMBASSADOR OF THE CZECH REPUBLIC MET WITH YSLU STUDENTS
June 8 YSLU welcomed the Ambassador of the Czech Republic Ivan Yestrab (residence in Tbilisi), Petr Mareš, ambassador-at-large of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic and Eva Kordova. The meeting started with a welcoming address delivered by YSLU rector prof. Suren Zolyan. Speaking about the Armenian-Czech relations he expressed willingness to cooperate with the European Union and noted that the two countries, through joint efforts, would further promote Armenian-Czech friendship and make greater achievements in their mutually beneficial cooperation in various fields.

03.06.2011 EURASIAN INTER-UNIVERSITY DIALOGUES ON COOPERATION FOR HIGHER EDUCATION DEVELOPMENT
The UNESCO European Centre for Higher Education (CEPES) and the UNESCO Chair on Inter-cultural and Inter-religious Exchanges at the University of Bucharest initiated a project to enhance cooperation and dialogue between Europe and Central Asia Higher Education Institutions and on May 27-28 organized a conference "Eurasian Inter-university Dialogues on Cooperation for Higher Education Development".
The conference was attended by YSLU delegation of four participants with the head of rector S. Zolyan. The latter presented a report “Intercultural Education within the System of Higher Education of Armenia”. The vice rector on science and international relations, L. Fljyan also had an opportunity to speak about the results of her research. Besides, a preliminary agreement on future cooperation.was obtained with UNESCO-CEPES and the Universities of Bucharest, Zagreb and Freiburg.

01.06.2011 CAREER AND INFROMATION DAY IN YSLU
On May 20, YSLU Career Center organized an expo "Career and Information Day", with participation of 50 organizations invited. Representatives from ministries, tourism agencies, hotels, as well as NGOs introduced their job positions, internships, educational and voluntary programs. Also school graduates were invited to get acquainted with the educational programs of the university. This year YSLU alumni-union is also very active. Great musician Levon Malkhasyan,a member of alumni-union, also attended the exhibition and preformed his beautiful musical compositions for the guests.

16.05.2011 THE WORKSHOP BY THE EXPERTS FROM THE COUNSIL OF EUROPE JOSEPH SHIELS AND JEAN CLAUDE BEACCO
On May 9-10 YSLU hosted experts from the Council of Europe Joseph Shiels, the founder of Language Education Policy and Jean Claude Beacco, doctor professor of Paris Sorbonne University. The two-day workshop “Reference Level Descriptions of National and Regional Languages” was conducted by the guest speakers with the participation of YSLU lecturers and the representatives of National Institute of Education. During the workshop they touched upon a number of important issues related to linguistics, such as language education policy, multilingualism, and common European framework of reference for languages: learning, teaching and assessment issues in Armenian context and beyond. The keynote speakers stressed the promising prospects of this workshop, which provides the dissemination of multilingualism and language education not only in Armenia, but abroad as well.
At the end YSLU Rector Suren Zolyan expressed his contentment on the success of the workshop and hoped that such kind of professional gatherings will bring positive changes in language education policy.

16.05.2011 DAVID FAHRADYAN RECEIVED HIS SECOND GUINNESS RECORDS CERTIFICATE
On May 11 David Fahradyan, senior lecturer of the chair of Physical education of YSLU, was awarded second Guinness records certificate. The awarding ceremony took place at "Aram Khachaturyan" concert hall. Gagik Tsarukyan, the president of National Olympic Committee of Armenia, was a person who handed the certificate. He congratulated David and awarded him the gold chain of ARMNOC. "It is an honour for us to have 7 Armenian athletes registered in the Guinness Book of Records. Achieving such results, David showed his strong will and the power of human spirit. We hope that he will set more and more records in the future". The record- holder in his turn presented the statuette he received for the record to the president of ARMNOC.
At the end of the ceremony the Rector of YSLU Suren Zolyan, congratulating David for his double victory, said: "David is ours, but his victory belongs to everyone".
To honour all the Armenians who have set records in 2011 a book about records, "Dyutsaznagirk", will be published with financial support of G. Tsarukyan.

05.05.2011 THE RESULTS OF G. BALAYAN’S AMERICAN RESEARCH
Gabriel Balayan, the vice rector of YSLU on administration and business has finished his 8 weeks fellowship funded by Carnegie Corporation of New York and administered by IREX.
He has conducted his research on University Financing at State University of New York. On 3 of May he had a presentation of his research paper at IREX Washington DC office. In his research he observed the policies and procedures of State University of New York, as well as the control mechanisms and reporting system of financial activities.
He proposed various approaches and policies which could be implemented in Armenian higher Education System. Some of them assume legislation changes while others could be implemented by YSLU itself. At his presentation he expressed hope that the practices he obtained during those weeks could be supported and implemented by the Armenian Government for ensuring the development of Armenian Higher Education System.

27.04.2011 VISIT TO THE ORPHANAGE AFTER MARY IZMILYAN
The students of YSLU specializing in International Tourism visited the kids of the orphanage after M. Izmilyan.
The students wondered how deprived these kids were because they didn`t have parents to love them and take care of them. Though the students could hardly keep their tears they put aside their emotions and gave smiles and happiness to the children with their exciting games, songs and dances. The students said good-bye to the kids promising to visit them again.

14.04.2011 THE OPENING CEREMONY OF THE CONFUCIUS BUST DEDICATED TO THE SECOND ANNIVERSARY OF CONFUCIUS INSTITUTE
On April 11 Yerevan State Linguistic University “Bryusov” held a ceremony dedicated to 2-nd anniversary of Confucius Institute. Senior official of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Li Changchun within the frames of his two-day official goodwill visit to Armenia attended the ceremony .On behalf of the Chinese government, Li Changchun presented a bust of Chinese philosopher and sage Confucius to the institute. "We are glad to see that the institute was warmly welcomed by Armenian students and local people. It has become an important window for Armenian youth to learn Chinese language and culture, as well as a great platform for deepening understanding and friendship between both peoples," Li said. He also invited another 20 Armenian students to join a Chinese summer camp this year.
Suren Zolyan, rector of YSLU mentioned in his speech “For five years, the Chinese language at our university has been taught as a second foreign language, and soon it will be taught as the first language. We are very grateful for the support of Hanban Headquarters of Confucius Institutes, which provides us with the opportunity to join the mainstream of this important and influential organization in the world”.
Rector awarded Mr. Changchun with the gold medal of the University. A concert program was featured at the event, followed by a ceremonious unveiling of a Confucius bust.

11.04.2011 FOR YOUNG FEMALE LEADERS
On March 26, 2011, a leadership training was organized in YSLU Student Council.
The initiator of the meeting Mrs. T. Hakobyan, YSLU PhD student at Pedagogy and Language Teaching Methodology Chair, made a presentation "The seven most important qualities of a female young leader". She spoke about youth, who always bring fresh, talented and creative ideas. She enlightened the most functional mechanisms that help a young person learn leadership skills which they will use in adult life whether in an employment setting or as an adult leader. It requires enthusiasm and dedication. She also mentioned the great role of the self-education of an individual. She finished by the words of famous American attorney and four-time candidate for President of the USA Ralph Nader "A leader has the vision and conviction that a dream can be achieved. He inspires the power and energy to get it done". The other trainer was Mrs. L. Beganyan, CEU graduate and YSLU lecturer. She spoke about Margaret Thatcher, who for the last quarter century has been one of the world s most influential and respected political leaders. The students expressed their points of view on her characteristic features, her highest international profile as a British politician and achievements as a woman leader.
The topic was so interesting and the discussion so hot, that the initiators decided to continue such kind of meetings and invite other experts of the field.

11.04.2011 INCLUSIVE EDUCATION
On April 6, 2011, a round table-discussion on the topic “Inclusive Education: perspectives and benefits” (International experience) was organized in YSLU “Centre for Communication and Special Approaches to Education”.
Associate Professor of YSLU Russian and Slavonic Linguistics Chair, PhD in Linguistics Ms. M. Sarkisova introduced the main objectives and problems of the topic.
The purpose of the discussion was to get acquainted with international experience, talk about current issues of the topic in Armenia and try to find ways of effective solution of such problems.
On the example of Portugal, Great Britain, Greece, USA and Germany Ms. Sarkisova presented the problems of children with disabilities, where an important role is given to the education and training of family members, methods of developing creative and critical thinking, and also noted the important role of language in this whole process.
Mrs. S. Zakarian, the head of the Center added that, especially linguists should be responsible for the construction of speech taking into consideration the psychological effects, should look for the most productive ways to achieve full freedom of communication.
Suggestions were also made by students. They also commented on the formation of a tolerant atmosphere in university.
YSLU students of different faculties, professors, experts and psychologist of the center A. Tevosyan were present at the discussion.

07.04.2011 ARMENIAN STORY "HANDS" IN 35 LANGUAGES
April 4, the presentation of the book "The hands" authored by Armenian writer and psychologist Elda Grin took place in YSLU. Elda Grin the event was opened with E. Grin's speech, where she mentioned: "Though the presentation of my book has already taken place in the Writers Union of Armenia. "I didn't refuse to have another presentation here in YSLU. My book has been translated into 35 languages. I I think it will be interesting especially for your students as 18 languages are taught in YSLU." The honorable guests of the event were Mr. and Mrs. Elbakyans, Sasun Paskevichyan, Arsen Grigoryan, Edgar Gyangumyan and others.
The students of Yerevan Komitas State Conservatory and Art school after Barsegh Kanachyan presented performances for the guests.
At the end of the event Elda Grin's granddaughter Eva Barsechyan presented her song called "Try to Fly".

01.04.2011 YSLU CELEBRATED 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE ASSOCIATION OF FRANCOPHONE UNIVERSITIES
Within the frames of "Francophonie Days in Armenia" on March 28 an event took place in YSLU dedicated to the fiftieth anniversary of the Association of Francophone Universities. During the event YSLU students made speeches, presenting the Association of Francophone Universities, its path, activities and mission. Adviser to the Foreign Minister of Armenia on Issues of Francophonie, Ambassador Christian Ter-Stepanyan, the ambassador of Romania to Armenia, Crina Prunariu, the ambassador of Lebanon to Armenia, Jabrail Gaara, and he Vice President of the Counsel of Rectors of the Central and Eastern European regional office of the Association of the Francophone Universities Adriana Rossou. The latter made a speech and delivered a lecture on the theme "Francophonie in Romania".

15.03.2011 DAVID FAHRADYAN IS A DOUBLE RECORD-HOLDER IN THE GUINNESS BOOK OF RECORDS
On November 13 2010 David Fahradyan senior lecturer of the chair of Physical education of YSLU did 75 turns on a bar by one hand beating his own record, which was included in The Guinness Book of Records. So D. Fahradyan is a double recorde-holder. He devoted this achievement to the 75 anniversary of his university (YSLU).
On March 14 a press conference was held on this occasion, where D. Fahradyan, Kh. Tevosyan, the head of the chair of Physical education and Lusine Fljyan, the pre-rector on science and International relations were present. As the head of the chair mentioned D. Fahradyan is the first sportsman in Armenia who has been registered in The Guinness Book of Records twice. A film about his trainings and his two records was presented during the press conference. And to the question of what he feels after being twice registered in The Guinness Book of Records, he answered, "I can’t deny the fact that achieving International recognition is very pleasant, but mostly I am proud that all I did, I did not only for me, but for my country as well".
At the end of the press conference D. Fahradyan thanked his coach, Mr. Kh. Tevosyan, the head of the chair of Physical education, Mr. S. Zolyan, the rector of YSLU and Mr. G. Tsarukyan, the president of Armenia s National Olympic Committee.

15.03.2011 WORKSHOP "LEARNING THROUGH LANGUAGES, PROMOTING INCLUSIVE, MULTILINGUAL AND INTERCULTURAL EDUCATION” LED BY VALDEMAR MARTYNIUK, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF EUROPEAN CENTRE FOR MODERN LANGUAGES
On March 11-12 YSLU welcomed Valdemar Martyniuk, executive director of European Centre for Modern Languages (ECML). On March 11 a meeting was held with Mr. Martyniuk and the lecturers of YSLU. The meeting started with a welcoming address delivered by YSLU rector prof. Suren Zolyan. Afterwords Mr. Martyniuk expressed his gratitude to the hosts for such a serious attitude and interest towards the ECML activities, dissemination and exchange of effective policies of foreign language learning.
The next day, on March 12, a workshop "Learning through Languages, promoting inclusive, multilingual and intercultural education» was held, with the participation of YSLU lecturers and other professionals from different educational institutions. The keynote speaker was Mr. Martyniuk, who presented strategies, programs and projects of ECML for 2011-2015. The focus of the speaker was on new developments in language learning assessment and the new ways of scoring of spoken language.
The panel discussions were followed by question-answer sessions. It was a useful event for the attendees of the workshop. At the end of the workshop the attendees received certificates for active participation.

02.03.2011 AN EXHIBITION AND PUBLIC LECTURE ON “AFRICAN AMERICAN FOOTPRINTS IN AMERICA” SPECIALLY FOR THE STUDENTS OF YSLU
On 24th February, 2011 in celebration of Black History Month, U.S. Embassy Yerevan and Library of YSLU after V.Brusov organized a lecture and exhibition for the students and staff of the university. U.S. Embassy Yerevan officer LaWanda Shepherd gave a public lecture on “African American Footprints in America”. Ms. Shepherd briefly introduced history of African American people, their cultural backgrounds, and spoke upon achievements of prominent black people. After the lecture the students actively participated in a discussion with representatives of the U.S. Embassy Yerevan, as well as attended the exhibition of African American history.

25.02.2011 THE VISIT OF THE AMBASSADOR OF FRANCE IN ARMENIA ANRY RENO TO YSLU
February 22, Anry Reno, the Ambassador of France in Armenia visited YSLU. First a meeting took place with YSLU rector S. Zolyan and then with the students and the professors of YSLU. The students had prepared a small concert for the honorable guest presenting famous French songs and poems. The Ambassador highly appreciated this meeting and expressed his gratitude to Suren Zolyan and the students for the warm and cordial treatment. He mentioned in his speech, "Armenia and its people are of great importance for France and we always look forward to strengthening and developing the relations between these two countries".

23.02.2011 MEETING WITH MANANA ASLAMAZYAN, THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF "INTERNEWS EUROPE"
February 16, Manana Aslamazyan, the executive director of "Internews Europe" delivered a lecture for the students of YSLU, the faculty of international journalism on the following topics: the modern problems of journalism and especially the problems connected with the Armenian mass-media; the advantages and disadvantages of journalism and also the professional skills that journalists must possess. She shared her experience and skills with the students introducing them the difficultes through which each journalist should pass.

23.02.2011 MEETING WITH A FAMOUS POETRESS ANAHIT SARGSYAN IN YSLU
On February 17 YSLU hosted Anahit Sargsyan – a writer, a member of Writers' Union of Ukraine, the founding director of Armenian culture centre in Kharkov. Among the guests there were the students of the school N.181, alumnis of the military college after Monte Melqonyan, the members of the non-governmental organization "Veteran teachers".
During the meeting with the initiative of YSLU library the writer's literary and musical works were presented by both the guests and the students.

22.02.2011 CHINESE "HOLIDAY OF LAMPS" IN YSLU
On February 16, with the initiative of Confucius Institute of Yerevan State Linguistic University "Bryusov" a cultural event devoted to the Chinese "Holiday of lamps" took place. According to the Chinese moon calendar the holiday of lamps is the last day of celebration of the New Year. On this occasion they burn lamps and write riddles on them. The Chinese believe that those who guess the riddles become wiser.
Tian Changchun, Ambassador of the People s Republic of China to the Republic of Armenia and Sergey Manasaryan, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of RA were present at the festival. The students of Confucius Institute with their Chinese instructors presented Chinese songs and dances.They also participated in the quiz and won prizes.

18.02.2011 ON-LINE LECTURE WITH THE AMERICAN-ARMENIAN JOURNALIST STEPHEN KURKJIAN
December 6, Stephen Kurkjian, the founder and the former editor of the world-famous newspaper "Boston Globe" delivered an on-line lecture for the students of YSLU, the faculty of international journalism on the following topics: investigative journalism and its features and the problems that may arise during the professional activities of journalists.
The lecture was unique both in content and in format. It was very interesting and instructive.
At the end of the lecture the journalist answered the students’ questions and said that such meetings must be continued.
"The Armenian Mirror-Spectator" the first Armenian weekly newspaper in the USA, also touched upon this lecture. Below You can read the published article. (page 7)

08.02.2011 CHINESE "SPRING HOLIDAY" IN CONFUCIUS INSTITUTE OF YSLU
February 2, Confucius Institute of YSLU held a reception on the occasion of the Chinese Spring Holiday and hosted high-ranking officials and representatives of ministries of RA: V. Sargsyan Deputy Head of the Office of the President of Armenia and President of the Council of YSLU, H. Poghosyan, Minister of Culture, K. Harutyunyan, Deputy Minister of Education and Science, A. Hovhannisian, the Head of the Foreign Ministry Department of Asia, Oceania and Africa and other officials.
The head of the Trustee Council of Confucius Institute ,Rector of YSLU Prof. S. Zolyan, congratulated everybody and wished Confucius Institute and its staff success and new achievements.

27.01.2011 RECTOR OF YSLU S. ZOLYAN’S VISIT TO MOSCOW
From January 20-21, Rector of YSLU S. Zolyan left for Moscow on a business trip and attended the international conference "Russian Language Abroad", held at Russian State University for the Humanities, where he presented a report "Status of the Russian Language in Armenia" and an agreement of cooperation was signed between Russian State University for the Humanities and Yerevan State Linguistic University "Bryusov".
During his visit to Moscow S. Zolyan took part in the international conference "Universities and Innovation: Networking cooperation among of CIS universities in training for the innovation economy" held at Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia.
Within the framework of the conference, by to the decision of the Coordinating Council YSLU became member of Consortium SU CIS.
